Milking the cash cow: Pfizer plans to sell mRNA COVID-19 vaccine at 10,000% markup in 2023

Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer plans to sell its mRNA vaccine for the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) at a 10,000 percent markup in 2023.

A report by Quartz elaborated on the vaccine maker’s plan to jack up prices of its experimental injection. Initially, the first 100 million doses of BNT162b2 were purchased for around $20 a dose. This price was made possible due to the Trump administration’s Operation Warp Speed, which invested $1.95 billion to kick-start the development of a COVID-19 vaccine.

The remaining 500 million doses were purchased for around $30 each, and Pfizer has sold subsequent doses for that price. However, the New York-based drug company announced on Oct. 20 that it will increase the price of BNT162b2 between $110 and $130 per dose.

This equated to about four times the vaccine’s current selling price, and 100 times its estimated cost of production. Quoting the advocacy group People’s Vaccine Alliance, Quartz pointed out that it costs Pfizer around $1.18 to produce a dose of its COVID-19 vaccine. This essentially meant that Pfizer planned to sell its vaccine at a 10,000 percent markup over its manufacturing cost. The Big Pharma firm even justified its planned price hike in an email to the outlet.

“There are key differences between an emergency and traditional model that increase the costs of making and distributing the COVID-19 vaccine,” the company said. Such costs, it added, include the vaccine’s distribution through multiple channels and payers. Moreover, Pfizer cited the production of single-vial doses – which can be up to three times more expensive than the regular process and incur higher transportation costs.

Igor Chudov commented on the development in an Oct. 24 piece on his Substack.

“Most of each dose of Pfizer’s ‘COVID vaccine’ is cheap stuff like water, polyethylene glycol and other chemicals. The actual active ingredient is the mRNA nanoparticles, and those are given at 30 micrograms (mcg) per dose,” he wrote.

Chudov then divided the $130 price increase with the 30 mcg (0.000030) of mRNA particles in each dose, coming up with a total of $4.33 million.

“So Pfizer is selling us their gene juice for over $4.33 million per gram. A pound (454 grams) of Pfizer’s mRNA nanoparticles would cost $2 billion, while the cost of making that … is under one percent of the price.”

Pfizer increasing prices of an injection that doesn’t even work at all

Chudov continued: “We all know that Pfizer likes to ‘move at the speed of science.’ Nowhere is the ‘speed of science’ more pronounced than in raising prices for its products. The business plan here, of course, is to keep as many vaccine mandates as possible and have health insurers cover the cost of increasingly frequent vaccinations, child vaccinations, etc.”

He cited the latest guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) about the new COVID-19 bivalent boosters. According to the national public health agency, people aged 12 years old and up need to be injected with the bivalent booster at least two months after completing their two-dose primary shots.

For those who were earlier injected with a monovalent booster, the CDC recommended a gap of at least two months before getting the bivalent booster.

However, Chudov remarked that CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky – who received the bivalent COVID-19 booster dose – tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. “Walensky is, of course, [vaccinated] to the max and is thankful for all the shots she received,” he said.

In a statement, the CDC said Walensky “is experiencing mild symptoms” after testing positive on Oct. 21. The agency added that the CDC director is isolating at home and plans to participate in meetings virtually.
